Alex has had a 30+ year career with Barclays Group in UK, Europe, USA and Latin America, managing businesses at Country, Channel and Product line levels in CEO, COO, Business Development and Finance Director roles.

Chief Executive Officer and Country Manager, Barclays, Portugal        

Led turnaround of retail bank with 70 offices, 500 staff, €2.5bn clients’ funds and €1.5bn loans. Radically improved cross-selling, client margin, cost to serve and the relationship model and diversified products and revenues which restored profits from breakeven

Finance Director, Barclays European Retail Banking Group, Spain: Responsible for performance monitoring, risk and liability management of European banking and wealth activities with €15bn clients’ funds, €7bn loans.    Led European strategic projects related to   corporate banking, customer behaviour, network expansion, internet services, credit cards,  mortgages and insurance.

Head of European Asset Management, France: Managed €11bn investments with 40 fund managers serving 150,000 affluent clients. Implemented new investment solution and product strategy across 5 countries

His focus was on Retail and Corporate Banking, Wealth Management and Insurance with a record of marketing and launching new product lines, improving profit performance and managing technology change as well as driving M&A transactions across borders and cultures.

Since leaving Barclays he has had a number of interim and consulting roles in financial services. He has also been an adviser and founding non-executive director to a number of technology companies in UK, focused on big data and analytics, IOT, smart buildings, cybers security and software asset and security management. He is a strong advocate of the Race to Zero.

Alex graduated from Manchester University in Modern Languages (Spanish, Portuguese and French). He is a qualified Associate of the UK Institute of Bankers and accredited business mentor. He attended executive programs at INSEAD and Ashridge business schools.
